How to Prepare for Various Olympiads?

How should you prepare for the Olympiads? How to improve the probability of scoring high in Olympiads? Perhaps, these questions must be a concern for you if you are eyeing appearing in various Olympiads. No wonder, Olympiads be it, Mathematical Olympiad, International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO), International Olympiad In Astronomy & Astrophysics (IOAA), Indian National Physics Olympiad (INPhO), Indian National Chemistry Olympiad (INChO ), Green Olympiad or any other, all of them prove to be rewarding as they develop the foundation of your competitive career, augment analytical thinking & problem-solving skills and confidence.

Discussed below are some effective tips that will help you prepare for various Olympiads-

  • Know the exam syllabus- Before starting with the preparation of any Olympiad, it is inevitable that you know the syllabus. To know the syllabus, you can visit the official website of the respective Olympiad exam. It will help you in preparing strategically and well-planned manner, giving due importance to the crucial topics.
  • Comprehend the exam pattern- It’s important that you understand the exam pattern of any Olympiad to manage your time and organise your preparation.
For instance, International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) includes 30 multiple choice questions i.e. 10 questions on Biology, 10 on Physics and 10 on Chemistry. So, gather the entire information on the exam pattern and get on with it.

  • Create a study schedule- After you have gathered the required information about the Olympiad, you should chalk out your study schedule and stick to it. An efficient study plan involves giving proper attention to difficult topics, important chapters and other high-scoring parts of the syllabus.
  • Don’t overlook the basic concepts- Note that almost all the Olympiads have problems that can be solved using the basic concepts that you already know. If it’s a mental ability Olympiad then you need to reinforce your focus on matrices, cubes, letter sequences, number sequences etc. So, while you learn new concepts, keep revising the already studied ones.
  • Solve previous years’ question papers- Well, this goes even without saying that to develop a knack for the subject and concepts, you must solve previous years’ question papers of the respective Olympiad. This way, you can get an insight into your strengths & shortcomings and work on them accordingly.
  • Seek help from teachers- You are likely to face doubts and other problems while preparing for any of the Olympiads. So, it is advised to take support from your teachers and seek solutions for your problems.
